County rededicates workforce center
August 3, 2010 – The Board of Carroll County Commissioners joined workforce partners, business representatives and residents to rededicate the expanded Business & Employment Resource Center (BERC) in Westminster on Monday, Aug. 2. Commissioner Julia W. Gouge, on behalf of the Board of County Commissioners, said “it is rewarding to now have a truly comprehensive one-stop workforce development center serving the citizens and businesses in Carroll County.”

At the celebratory event, Economic Development Director Larry Twele noted “thousands of citizens have utilized the workforce center and benefitted from one convenient location where our workforce partners – Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing & Regulation and Carroll Community College join us to provide comprehensive employment and training services.”

BERC provides direct business services by finding and training qualified applicants to fill job openings, by funding customized employee training and sharing local labor market information. BERC also provides job search workshops and education and training for job seekers.

A comprehensive agency website is available at www.carrollworks.org where a calendar of events details scheduled workshops. BERC is located at 224 N. Center St. in Westminster and is open Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Save the Date for Rape Crisis Intervention Service of Carroll County’s “A Culinary Experience.” 

Westminster, Maryland - On Monday, October 11, 2010, Rape Crisis Intervention Service of Carroll County (RCIS) will host its 11th annual "A Culinary Experience" fundraiser.  The event will be held from 6:30 – 9:30pm at Martin’s Westminster. Local restaurants, caterers, and bakeries will showcase their talents by serving everything from soup to desserts. The evening will also include silent and live auctions and music by The Eric Byrd Trio.  This is an opportunity to enjoy a wonderful variety of local cuisine while supporting the needs of residents of Carroll County affected by sexual violence.   

Child sexual abuse, rape and sexual assault are issues that transcend boundaries of gender, age, race and socio-economic status.  RCIS is the only facility in the area trained to work with the very specific issues associated with the trauma caused by sexual crimes.  The staff provides professional and compassionate intervention, 24-hour hotline services, advocacy services, therapeutic counseling, and education to promote prevention and community services. 

In fiscal year 2009-2010, in Carroll County, RCIS staff and volunteers:

  • accompanied 31 victims of sexual violence to the hospitalprocessed 403 hotline callsconducted 124 face-to-face crisis interventionsconducted 410 individual therapy sessions
  • presented 346 educational or training sessions, with a total of 11,955 attendees

August Media Workshops Offered by CMC

Westminster, Maryland (July 23, 2010) – The Community Media Center (CMC) is offering the following free media workshops during the month of July 2010. 

CMC Orientation – Getting to know the CMC August 18 at 6 pm at the Community Media CenterThe community is invited to learn about your local PEG access center and how you can produce and edit video for television and the web. Orientation covers how to become a certified producer and the multiple uses of public access.  

Basic Certification August 21st at 9 am at the Community Media CenterCMC members are invited to attend the Basic Certification workshop which includes learning to operate digital video cameras, audio equipment, and non-linear video editing.  

Carroll County History Project Workshop  August 21st at 10 am at the Community Media CenterThe CMC offers this training on a monthly basis that includes interviewing techniques and camera skills. The organization also coordinates interviews between History Project volunteers and Carroll County residents who are interested in sharing their memories for the archive. 

Social Networking Workshop – Using OurCarroll.com to network in the communityAugust 21st at 11 am at the Community Media CenterIndividuals are invited to learn how to upload digital media including photos, videos, audio clips and blogs to Carroll County’s social media site.  

Workshops, except for Basic Certification, are free and open to the public but registration is required.  The Basic Certification workshop is offered at no charge to members of the Community Media Center. EDWARDS, DARK & EVELIUS MOVE TO WTTR

Westminster, MD (July 2010) Oldies 1470 WTTR-AM Westminster announces the hiring of several radioveterans to its air staff. 

Jack Edwards comes aboard for the 9 to noon shift. This popularpersonality is 'Mr. Encyclopedia' when it comes to playing those great Top 40 memories. Mr. Edwards began on July 19. 

Johnny Dark has been tabbed to handle noon to 3. 'The Voice' still holds Baltimore's all-time record for rating share. Mr. Dark debuts on Monday August 2. 

Both Johnny and Jack rose to prominence in the 60's at legendary Big 60 WCAO. 

Weekends now feature Betsy Santos on the 6 to 10 morning wake-up. She's followed by Joe Evelius in his new 10-3 Saturday slot. Joe is recognized as one of the nation's foremost collectors of broadcast memorabilia. 

The morning show with Bob Mathers and Mark Woodworth has shifted an hour earlier to 5-9 AM. 

Along with these personnel moves, WTTR is reaffirming its commitment to serving Carroll County by adding more resources to area news coverage and consolidating its former Saturday morning programs into its increasingly popular news and public affairs block on Sunday mornings from 7-10 AM.  

WTTR is a Sajak Broadcasting station playing 'The Greatest Hits of all Time'.

 

DVD Copies of 2010 Election Candidates Forums Available

Westminster, Maryland (July 27, 2010) – The Community Media Center (CMC) will have copies of the League of Women Voters’ state and local candidates forums for Carroll County’s primary elections available to the public after each forum. Residents may purchase DVD copies of the forums or visit the CMC to view them. To find out more, contact the CMC at 410-386-4415.

The forums will be broadcast live on cable Channel 19, Carroll Public Access, and Channel 23, the Town and Community Channel, and they will be rebroadcasted until the elections. They will also be available on demand at the CMC’s website at www.carrollmediacenter.org.
